What science students can study in Nigerian universities

Science students have the broadest course options of any JAMB stream, but the choice between medicine, engineering, the pure sciences and the applied technology routes is genuinely difficult. This guide walks through what is open to you, what is competitive, and how to choose.

What science stream qualifies you for

Nigerian undergraduate admission is structured around JAMB UTME subject combinations. Science-stream candidates (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics in various combinations) qualify for the broadest range of courses: medicine and the health sciences, all engineering specialities, the pure and applied sciences, computing and information technology, agriculture and related environmental courses, and a wide span of social-science and management programmes that accept maths-strong applicants.

The trade-off for breadth is competition. Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering and Computer Science attract the strongest science candidates from across the country, so cut-offs at the top federal universities sit at 250 and above. Accessible science routes exist - and many lead to equally strong careers - but the front-door routes to top federal medicine require an upper-tier UTME and a strong post-UTME.

The competitive science programmes

Medicine and Surgery is the most contested undergraduate programme in Nigeria. Cut-offs at UNILAG, UI and OAU sit at 290-295 for 2026; less competitive institutions admit at 270+. Six-year programme. Suits candidates with patience, strong science foundations and a commitment to lifelong study. Career destinations: clinical practice, public health, medical research, healthcare administration.

Pharmacy is similar in competitiveness to medicine but five years long. Cut-offs at top federal universities sit at 270-280. Career destinations: community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug regulation.

Engineering covers civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, petroleum, computer, mechatronics, aerospace and a handful of specialised sub-fields. Cut-offs at federal universities of technology sit around 230-260; traditional federal universities a few points higher for the most contested specialities. Five-year programmes with industrial training. Career destinations: oil and gas, telecoms, manufacturing, infrastructure, consultancy.

Computer Science is the most contested science programme outside medicine and pharmacy at most institutions. Cut-offs at top federals sit at 240-260. Four-year programme. The career outlook is the strongest in Nigeria among undergraduate programmes - remote roles, startup hiring and bank/fintech demand. Software Engineering and Data Science are adjacent options.

The accessible science programmes

Agricultural Science, Animal Science, Forestry, Fisheries sit at the JAMB national minimum or just above at most institutions. Four-year programmes (some five). Career destinations: agribusiness, research institutes, federal and state ministries of agriculture, NGO work in food security.

Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Zoology, Genetics are competitive enough to be interesting but accessible for mid-range JAMB scores (200-230). Four-year programmes. Career destinations: laboratory work, research, pharma industry, environmental and agricultural sectors.

Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Chemistry, Applied Physics are accessible specialised sciences with strong career ladders in oil and gas, mining, manufacturing and the renewable energy sector. Cut-offs are typically 190-220 at federal universities.

Education and Science combinations (Education and Mathematics, Education and Biology, Education and Chemistry, Education and Physics) sit at lower cut-offs than the standard science programmes. Four-year programmes that qualify you to teach at secondary level. Career destinations: secondary school teaching, colleges of education, federal and state ministries of education.

The applied technology and sciences route

A relatively new and increasingly popular path: programmes such as Software Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence sit at the intersection of computer science and applied technology. They tend to be available at the federal universities of technology and a handful of private universities, with cut-offs in the 220-260 range. Career destinations are similar to Computer Science with more specialised positioning, and entry-level salaries at the top tier are among the highest of any Nigerian undergraduate degree.

The Biomedical, Materials, Systems and Production Engineering specialities offer adjacent applied-science routes that combine engineering depth with industry-specific positioning. Industrial Mathematics and Statistics are also strong choices for science students with quantitative strength but no clear pull toward medicine or hardware engineering.

How to choose between options

The honest framework: combine your JAMB readiness, your interest profile, and your career anchor. Use our free 8-minute quiz to get a structured shortlist of 5 courses with the universities that fit your score. The quiz blends the Holland (RIASEC) interest profile with your stream, JAMB score and preferences - much faster than reading every course page in turn.

For science students specifically, the three questions to ask yourself are: (1) Do I want patient-facing work or analytical/lab work? (2) Am I comfortable with five-to-six-year programmes, or do I want to start earning sooner? (3) Is my JAMB score in the upper, middle or lower band, and what does that realistically open up at the institutions on my list?

Frequently asked questions

What courses can science students study in Nigeria?

Science students (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics) qualify for the broadest range of Nigerian university courses. Medical and engineering programmes are exclusive to science students. The pure sciences, applied sciences and computing all sit in this stream. Social sciences and management are also open in most universities, since maths-strong science students cross over readily.

Is medicine the best course for science students?

Medicine is the most competitive science-stream course and one of the most respected, but it suits a specific personality - patient-facing, willing to commit six years plus housemanship, comfortable with constant studying. Engineering, the laboratory sciences, pharmacy and nursing are also strong science-stream choices for candidates whose interests sit elsewhere.

What is the easiest science course to get admitted into?

Among science programmes, Agriculture, Animal Science, Forestry, Fisheries and certain Education and X (Science) programmes typically have the lowest cut-offs at most Nigerian universities. These are accessible routes for science students with mid-range JAMB scores who want a science-stream degree without competing for the top-tier courses.

Can I study computer science without physics?

Computer Science formally requires Mathematics, English and any two science subjects at UTME, with Physics commonly listed. Some institutions accept alternative science combinations. Mathematics is essential. Check the specific institution's published UTME requirement before relying on a combination.

How competitive is engineering admission?

Engineering is moderately competitive at federal universities, with cut-offs typically 220-260 depending on the speciality. Federal universities of technology (FUTA, FUTO, FUTMINNA) admit at slightly higher cut-offs than traditional federal universities. State universities and a few private universities offer more accessible engineering routes.

What if my JAMB score is too low for medicine?

Three honest options: pivot to a related health science (pharmacy, nursing, medical laboratory science, physiotherapy, public health) at the same or different institution; apply for medicine at less competitive institutions where the cut-off is lower; retake JAMB next cycle. Avoid the trap of stretching for medicine at an institution where your score is far below the cut-off.

Are private universities good for science students?

Several private universities run strong science programmes, particularly Babcock (medicine, pharmacy, nursing, sciences), ABUAD (medicine, engineering, sciences) and Covenant (engineering, computer science, sciences). Trade-offs are higher fees and sometimes narrower programme catalogues. The teaching quality and graduation timelines are competitive with federal alternatives.

Should I take JUPEB or IJMB if my JAMB is weak?

JUPEB and IJMB are A-level-equivalent direct-entry programmes that bypass JAMB entirely. Science students with a weak UTME but strong science foundations often benefit from one year of focused JUPEB/IJMB and Direct Entry into year-two of a degree. The total time matches a fresh degree start, with a higher admission ceiling at the end.
